Project title: Integrated Genetic Surveillance of Malaria and Schistosomiasis at the Community Level in the Saint-Louis Region
Biography:
Omar Sow was born in Dakar/Senegal. His stays in his village allowed him to develop a special relationship with nature and sparked his interest in life sciences through his early microscopic observations at 9 years.
In 2016, after obtaining a baccalaureate in experimental sciences, Omar Sow pursued his studies at the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), where he earned a bachelor's degree in life and earth sciences in 2019, followed by a master's degree in population genetics in 2022. His academic career to date has been oriented toward health sciences whether directly working with people as in his internship of studying the vectors responsible for human disease as in his master’s studies on Anopheles distribution. While being responsible for the molecular biology laboratory at Gaston Berger University, Omar has always found the combination of bench work with field work most satisfying.
Earlier in 2023, following a rigorous selection process, he was awarded a four-year funding scholarship from the MARCAD Plus program for his PhD research on integrated genetic surveillance of malaria and schistosomiasis in the north of Senegal where both are endemic.
Omar Sow has skills with R programs and a background in molecular biology and population genetics. Beyond research, he is also passionate about literature, running and swimming.
