Drammeh Ndey Fatou

Host institution : MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM, Gambia

Project title: Persistent historical antimalarial resistance genetic backgrounds and alternate molecular mechanisms of P. falciparum drug resistance in The Gambia

Biography:

After completing a Foundation degree (FdSc) in Biomedical Science from St George’s Hospital Medical School (University of London), Ndey Fatou Drammeh earned a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Applied Biosciences from the University of Ulster. Her research focused on the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum populations, differentiating between re-infection and recrudescence in a Gambian artemisinin efficacy study using MSP genotyping and SNP barcoding methods. She then pursued an MPhil in Biological Science at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, University of Cambridge, where Ndey Fatou investigated genes implicated in malaria parasite drug resistance. Her MPhil project focused on resistance-associated mutations' impact on parasite resistance and fitness, examining how genetic backgrounds influence phenotypes using barcode sequencing (BarSeq) on CRISPR/Cas9-edited P. falciparum. Currently, she is a MARCAD Plus PhD fellow at MRCG at LSHTM, conducting research on antimalarial drug responses in Gambian isolates, investigating polymorphisms in known drug resistance markers and loci in haemoglobin metabolism pathways. This fellowship supports Ndey Fatou Drammeh goal of expanding her understanding of drug resistance mechanisms and dynamics, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
