The college which has its main campus at Kossoh Town in Freetown, Sierra is the first medical school in Sierra Leone after it was founded on the 12th of April 1988, by the Government of Sierra Leone with support from the Nigerian Government and the World Health Organization.

COMAHS has a primary mandate to produce doctors, nurses, pharmacists, biomedical scientists, and laboratory technicians with a view of improving the healthcare delivery system in Sierra Leone. Hence, the College has strategically cemented its position as a leading institution in national health research and capacity strengthening in Sierra Leone by generating the much-needed evidence to inform policies and practices in the area of health. The College is also involved in needs-based research activities at both national and international levels to ensure that it continues to play a key role in the health system as well as in rebuilding and strengthening the nation’s socio-economic development at both national and international levels.

Ongoing Malaria Studies by COHMAS – June 2023

A. Multiply Study in collaboration with Isglobal Barcelona funded by EDCTP

Objectives:

  • To assess the operational feasibility of IPTi at health facilities and outreach EPI clinics.
  • To evaluate the cost and cost-effectiveness of IPTi implementation.
  • To assess the acceptability (satisfaction, barriers and facilitators) and fidelity of IPTi implementation.
  • To evaluate the impact of IPTi implementation on the prevalence and incidence of malaria (infection and clinical cases), severe disease (hospital admissions), anaemia
  • and overall mortality, as well as on health services integration and quality of care (including immunizations and vitamin A uptake).
  • To compare prevalence of malaria in U2 children before and after two years of multiple doses of IPTi implementation in project districts.
  • To compare the coverage of IPTi3 before and after two years of multiple doses of IPTi implementation in the project district of Sierra Leone.
  • To monitor the development of SP resistance markers in project areas.

Goal

  • To improve child survival by decreasing malaria and anaemia burden, as well as vaccine preventable diseases.

B. ICARIA study in collaboration with Isglobal Barcelona and funded by Bill & Melinda Gate and La Caixa foundation.

Evaluation of the impact on childhood mortality of azithromycin plus intermittent preventive treatment administered through the expanded program on immunization in Sierra Leone.
