Host institution : MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM

Project title: Clone dynamics in polygenomic infections of Plasmodium falciparum and antimalarial drug responses in The Gambia.

Biography:

Aminata Seedy Jawara is a Scientific Officer at the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at LSHTM with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biology from the University of The Gambia. Her expertise lies in malaria population biology, where she conducts extensive malaria research experiments and data analysis to contribute to the scientific deliveries of different projects. Aminata has contributed to several published scientific articles in reputable journals, enhancing the institution's reputation as a leading scientific entity. An MSc fellowship from the Malaria Research and NTDs Research Capacity Development in West and Central Africa (MARCAD Plus) will provide her with an opportunity to conduct her proposed research titled; Clone dynamics in polygenomic infections of Plasmodium falciparum and antimalarial drug responses in The Gambia. The main goal of this project is to determine how genetic diversity correlates with antimalarial drug resistance profiles in infected individuals across the western and eastern regions of the Gambia over a decade (2013 and 2023). Aminata Seedy aims to lead innovative malaria research to identify potential antimalarial drug compounds that impact drug development and significantly reduce malaria morbidity and mortality in The Gambia and the sub-region.
