Malaria and NTDs Research Capacity Development (MARCAD Plus) in West and Central Africa is among the 14 consortia selected for the second phase of The Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training, and Science in Africa (DELTAS Africa) programme. The DELTAS Africa II launch ceremony was held on March 14th, 2023, in Nairobi, Kenya.
Virtue Fiawokome De-Gaulle in Ghana, a MARCAD PhD fellow, has been awarded an African Researchers’ Small Grant for her research on “Ivermectin-based Community Mass Treatment: Perspective for Accelerating the soil transmitted helminths Elimination in Cameroon and Ghana”.
Virtue is one of the sixteen researchers (10 males and 6 females) from eight African countries selected as the fifth cohort of the Program (SGP V) by the Coalition for Operational Research on Neglected Tropical Disease (COR-NTD) and the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD).
University of Health and Allied Sciences, from September 27 to October 1, hosted a scientific writing workshop organised by the Malaria Research Capacity Development Consortium (MARCAD) for 15 fellows at the Volta Serene Resort in Ho. UHAS is a member of the consortium, which comprises five African and three European partners.
Dr Drissa Coulibaly, a MARCAD postdoctoral fellow, has been awarded a grant on International Research in Infectious Diseases including AIDS (IRIDA) R01 by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/ National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In this interview, Dr Coulibaly talked about his new five-year grant project, which, according to him, aimed to assess the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) impact.
How do you feel after being awarded an IRIDA R01 fellowship?
I feel lucky and a bit fear.
Lucky because as a researcher, this is an achievement in my Personal Development Plan. I will set up a team; medical and pharmacy students will work on the project and develop their thesis.
MARCAD Postdoctoral Fellows, Dr Ousmane Sy and Dr Benoît Sessinou Assogba, have celebrated the World Malaria Day 2021 by presenting some of their recent research results and discoveries made within their MARCAD fellowship. Dr Sy and Dr Assogba have exposed these new data that could support the Malaria elimination during the joint webinar organised on 5th May 2021 by Senegal and The Gambia NMCPs, the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, The University of Thies, the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM, LSHTM Malaria Center and MMV.
