About Marcad

The Malaria Research Capacity Development Consortium (MARCAD) seeks to train a core group of African scientists in West and Central Africa who will be able to provide relevant answers for the control and elimination of malaria. One PhD and two post-docs fellows are hosted at each partner institution across five African countries (Mali, The Gambia, Cameroon, Ghana and Senegal).

The University Cheikh Anta Diop UCAD, Senegal (Prof O. Gaye) leads the Consortium which includes USTTB, Mali (Prof OK. Doumbo); MRC, The Gambia (Prof U. D'Alessandro); UY1, Cameroon (Prof W. Mbacham) and UHAS, Ghana (Prof HK. Tagbor). Three European institutions collaborate in this programme: LSHTM-UK, LSTM-UK and UoC, Denmark.

Dr Drissa Coulibaly

Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC)  Université des Sciences, des Techniques et des Technologies de Bamako (USTTB)

Post Doc

Projet title: Using spatio-temporal dynamic of malaria to optimize control Interventions

Drissa has a medical doctor degree, a PhD degree in medical parasitology and entomology. He started working on malaria research programs since 1995.
He has been associate investigator or principal investigator for various epidemiological studies and for malaria vaccines clinical trials including pediatric trials. Despite the decline of malaria incidence consecutive to the scaling up of malaria controls strategies, it remains a public health concern in endemic areas particularly in the sub Saharan Africa. Recently the Malian National Malaria Control Program scaled up the seasonal malaria chemoprevention strategy and the Indoor Residual Spray strategy is foreseen in the Mopti region including Bandiagara health district. For the three coming year, as part of his MARCAD fellowship, Dr Coulibaly work will be focus on the updating of malaria epidemiological parameters including space and time characterization of symptomatic and asymptomatic malaria to better guide and optimize malaria control efforts. He will conduct a cohort study of 300 children aged 0 to15 years old.
Dr Coulibaly obtained the Fogarty International Center/ Ellison Medical Foundation fellowship in 2003; the Advanced Vaccinology course/ Mérieux Foundation fellowship in 2011, the International Advanced Course on Vaccinology in Asia-Pacific regions fellowship in 2013 and the MARCAD post doc fellowship in 2017. He has more than thirty publications in peer-review journals.

Dr Kone Aminatou

Malaria Research and Training Center/USTTB, MAli

Post Doc

Projet title:  Plasmodium falciparum dormancy in the in vivo parasite clearance time after artesunate treatment.

Kone Aminatou has a Master degree in Animal Biology and a PhD in Medical sciences, she is involved in the malaria drug resistance epidemiology research since 2002 first as field data collector, and now as research assistant.
The position as a MARCAD post-doc fellow will allow her to develop my research topic on the molecular resistance of malaria to artemisinines and also develop her ability to get autonomous as a researcher (grant writing, grand application, project management and leadership). During this same period, she will find a position as lecturer at the university.

ASSOGBA S. Benoît

Medical Research Council, The Gambia

Post-doc

Projet title: Mass swarm trapping as malaria vector control strategy in Gambia

Dr ASSOGBA S. Benoît holds a PhD in Medical Entomology and Parasitology applied for Human Health Protection from the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC, Benin) and University of Montpellier (UM, France) which focused in insecticide resistance mechanism evolution by using the experimental, molecular and genomic approach to understand how malaria vector adapt to different insecticide environment pressure. He sought alternative strategies by developing new tools for malaria vector in West Africa.
Malaria Research Capacity Development in West and Central Africa (MARCAD) granted Dr Assogba with a Post-doctoral Fellowship to conduct his research on the ‘Mass swarm trapping as malaria vector control strategy in Gambia’. The main goal of his research project is to better understand how mass swarm trapping can be implemented as community-based approach for malaria control strategy.
Dr Assogba is committed oneself to become an international independent scientific. Then, the award Dr Assogba received will help to establish a competitive program in Medical Entomology and Parasitology applied for malaria control and elimination in West Africa. The MARCAD is the best opportunity for him to bolster his own research capacities, to confirm his leadership and assure the setting up of efficient research team in Africa.

Dr. Kevin Ochieng Opondo

Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG)

Post-doc

Projet title: Impact of Insecticide Resistance on Malaria Vector Longevity and Transmission Potential in the Wild

I hold a PhD in Tropical Medicine majoring in entomology/epidemiology from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK which sought to understand how mosquito behaviour and insecticide resistance affect malaria transmission patterns in The Gambia. Previously, I spent two years at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in Tanzania as part of my MSc (University of Nairobi) training investigating how mosquito behaviour affects the design and development of mosquito sampling tools.
My research interests, partly covered by my current MARCAD fellowship, is to measure the transmission potential of resistant malaria vectors in the wild. Application of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to guide malaria control strategies and in simplified communication of science to policy makers, to enable evidence-based decision making. My future plan is to be an expert in operational research by assisting disease control programmes to improve the effectiveness of control tools to save lives.

Matilda Aberese Ako

University of Health and Allied Sciences

Post-doc

Projet title: Socio-cultural factors influencing knowledge, attitudes and acceptance of malaria interventions among pregnant women in Ghana

Matilda Aberese-Ako is a medical and organizational anthropologist and a Research Fellow at the Institute of Health Research in the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana. She previously worked with the Navrongo Health Research Centre as a research fellow.  She has a BA hons degree in Integrated Development Studies from the University for Development Studies in Ghana. She also obtained an MA degree in Development Studies from the Erasmus International Institute of Social Studies and a PhD in Medical and Organisational Anthropology from the Wageningen University and Research, all in the Netherlands. Her current research focuses on behavioural and attitudinal influences on acceptance of malaria interventions among pregnant women in Sub Saharan Africa. She is also involved in studies on maternal and new born health care using community resources in rural areas of Ghana.

Dr. Gifty Dufie AMPOFO

University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Volta Region, Ghana

Post-Doctoral

Projet title: An assessment of the implementation and effectiveness of recommended routine antenatal care interventions for the control of malaria and other parasitic infections in pregnancy in Ghana

Gifty has a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Ghana, Legon and a Masters’ and PhD in Public Health from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi in Ghana. She worked as Head of various health institutions in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality, Ashanti Region of Ghana for 11 years. She is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana. Her research interests are in maternal and child health and implementation of health interventions. Her current research focuses on assessing the burden of malaria in adolescent females and young women who form the majority of the population of first and second time pregnant women and understanding what influences their use malaria preventive measures, especially the bed net, to help develop appropriate delivery of these interventions.
